"Too Close to Heaven," the opener and title track, did sell a million copies in the mid-'50s, when not even many pop records did that. Plus four more outtakes. Very interesting liner notes but they spell out very few musical specifics. ~ Dave Marsh, All Music GuidePerformers: Prof. Alex Bradford - Celeste, Piano, Vocals, Whistle (Human); Charles Brown - Bongos, Drums, Organ, Tambourine; John Maxwell - Tambourine; Princess Stewart - Vocals (Background); James E. At the Close of a Century $115.99 He's been called one of the most influential performers and songwriters of the century, but until 1999 Stevie Wonder didn't even have a box set to call his own. Such was the reissue campaign at Motown that, until very recently, some of the best pop music of the '60s sounded poorer in reissue form than when it was first played on AM radio. In 1996, the long-awaited Stevie Wonder digital-age hits package Song Review reached the shelves, but it didn't even follow compilation etiquette (that is, chronological order). Finally, At the Close of a Century made everything right -- complete with digital remastering, near-perfect sound, complete coverage of his epic career, an attractive design, and copious liner notes and pictures. The box, a four-disc set spanning 1962 to 1996, debuts with "Fingertips, Pts. 1 & 2," the long-unheard seven-minute version of his first hit. The first disc includes every hit that fans can remember, including great-sounding versions of "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" and "Hey Love," plus plenty of moderate hits they may not remember, like his definitive cover of the Beatles' "We Can Work It Out." Disc two features more than a dozen of his biggest hits, including "Superstition," "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," "Living for the City," "Higher Ground," and "Boogie On Reggae Woman." Disc three begins with no less than nine tracks from Songs in the Key of Life, his standout double album from 1976. Right into the '80s and '90s, Stevie Wonder remained at the top of the charts, with hits like "Rocket Love," "Master Blaster (Jammin')," "Happy Birthday," "I Just Called to Say I Love You," and "Part-Time Lover." It took far too long, but Motown finally issued a box set worthy of Stevie Wonder's continuing artistry. ~ John Bush, All Music GuidePerformers: Robert A. Arbittier - Computers; Malcolm Cecil - Arp, Bass, Moog Synthesizer; Robert Margouleff - Arp, Moog Synthesizer; Yusuf Roahman - Shaker; Dorothy Ashby - Harp; Lenny Castro - Conga; Rocky Dzidzornu - Conga; The Jackson 5 - Vocals (Background); |

Close to You $9.98 Hurriedly put together in the wake of the success of the title song, and containing the follow-up hit "We've Only Just Begun," Close to You is a surprisingly strong album, and not just for those hits. Richard Carpenter's originals "Maybe It's You" and "Crescent Noon" are superb showcases for Karen Carpenter's developing talent, the latter a superbly atmospheric, hauntingly beautiful art song of the kind that Judy Collins was doing well at the time, and gorgeously arranged. There's also a Swingle Singers-style number, "Mr. Guder," showing off their paired vocal talents and more of Richard's arranging talents. Karen's singing on "Reason to Believe" isn't so much somber as it is passionate, as she emphasizes the melancholy component in the song more than most versions. Their version of "Help" lacks the inventiveness of "Ticket to Ride," although it has some pleasing vocal flourishes. The finale, "Another Song," tries hard for a serious rock sound, especially in Karen's animated drumming, but it's her voice that stands out. Released amid the political turmoil of 1970, in the wake of the Cambodian incursion, Kent State, and the conservative backlash against the antiwar forces, there was no way that the rock press or the most politically active listeners were going to appreciate this record, but the fact that it had two huge hit singles and earned a gold record award raised their ire against the Carpenters, a problem that would dog the duo for most of its career. But the public bought, and kept on buying. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music GuidePerformers: Jim Horn - Wind, Woodwind; Hal Blaine - Drums; Karen Carpenter - Drums, Vocals; Richard Carpenter - Keyboards, Vocals; Bob Messenger - Bass, Wind, Woodwind; Joe Osborne - Bass; Doug Strawn - Keyboards, Wind, Woodwind; Danny Woody Woodhams - Bass |

And Close as This $15.98 Peter Hammill seems to alternate between releasing unpredictable work (the rock opera The Fall of the House of Usher, the electronic, experimental Loops & Reels, etc.), and his trademark style (straight-ahead arrangements for voice and one other instrument, usually guitar). And Close as This would fall into the former category, since it's comprised exclusively of pure arrangements (in this case, voice and keyboard). It's hard not to be impressed by the emotion in Hammill's voice on the songs "Other Old Clichés" and "Beside the One You Love." And like all of his past work, Hammill will often unite gentle music with sometimes overtly intense vocals ("Too Many Yesterdays"). The keyboards on the album have been filtered through a computer, updating the classic Hammill sound laid-down on his earlier (and best) work, Chameleon In the Shadow of the Night. But Hammill would unfortunately not pursue this style for a while -- his next album, In a Foreign Town, would be the complete opposite of And Close as This, containing overblown production, and an extremely dated '80s sound. And Close as This, however, is one of Hammill's finest. ~ Greg Prato, All Music GuidePerformers: Paul Ridout - Computers, MIDI; Peter Hammill - Guitar, Keyboards, Vocals |

Eventually, they settle down and have a family, and determine that their children will not have to face the same kind of hardships they did. Close Harmony $159.98 While the Bear Family label in Germany has accomplished many formidable feats -- four Johnny Cash box sets, six Hank Snow boxes, four Flatt & Scruggs boxes, and on and on -- the accomplishment in putting together this eight-CD 219-track collection of Louvin Brothers recordings may be the label's finest hour. If there were ever a duo that embodied the entirety of the country tradition from its folk music and gospel roots through the development of bluegrass and into honky tonk music, it was the Louvins, who have inspired virtually everyone who has come after them. Charlie and Ira took harmony singing to a new level and the creation of full-length albums far out of the sphere of one or two singles and filler. Whether it be in the duets of Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton, Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris, or the alt-country band Freakwater, the Louvins are in the stem. Here are contained all of their Capitol, Decca, MGM, and Apollo sides. All of the concept recordings, such as Satan Is Real, Tragic Songs of Life, and the rest, are here in chronological order, with complete session notes. In merely listing the personnel, the reader will be awed at who performed with them: Owen Bradley, Pete Drake, Don Helms, Chet Atkins, Grandpa Jones, Dale Potter, Buddy Harman, Jimmy Capps, and the Jordanaires, to name just a few. Fred Rose was their producer, along with Bradley. And then the songs -- whether they be traditional Christmas songs like "O Little Town of Bethlehem," broken-hearted love songs such as "I Hear You've Been Cheatin' on Me" and "Love Is a Lonely Street," patriotic anthems such as "I Died for the Red, White and Blue," or gospel songs like "Mother I Thank You for the Bible You Gave Me," the restless, lonesome ghostly sound of sweetness itself is present. It's true that this is mainly for the fanatics, but it's also for libraries and historians of the music, and for those who can't get enough of Gram and Emmylou or real country music. This set is a treasure. Period. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music GuidePerformers: Ira Louvin - Guitar (Tenor), Mandolin, Vocals; Owen Bradley - Vibraphone; Paul Buskirk - Mandolin; Eddie Hill - Fiddle, Guitar; Shot Jackson - Dobro; Thomas Lee Jackson Jr. - Fiddle; Grandpa Jones - Banjo; |

The Handbook of Natural Flavonoids , a href= $185.79 Flavonoids are a large and important group of natural products derived from 'flavone'. Some flavonoids are intensely coloured, providing a spectrum of colours from red to blue in flowers, fruit and leaves. Other flavonoids are essentially colourless, producing the 'whiteness' of white flowers. Besides their contribution to plant colour, flavonoids have a variety of other roles in the growth and development of plants. Leaf flavonoids provide protection from the potential damage of UVB radiation. Certain flavanones are formed as antifungal barriers in plant leaves in response to microbial infection and others play an important part in plant reproduction. Flavonoids also exhibit a wide range of biological properties including anti-microbial, insecticidal and oestrogenic activities. Edited by one of the world's acknowledged leading researchers in flavonoid chemistry and biochemistry, this book is the essential guide to the chemical structure and function of all known flavonoids and contains full references, CAS numbers, chemical structures, molecular formulae and several extensive indexes. Close as Pages in a Book $13.98 On her seventh solo album, former Broadway star Barbara Cook finally found a home on her fifth label, show-music-friendly DRG Records. MCA Classics had released her celebrated previous LP, 1988's Disney Album, but that proved to be a one-off project. DRG and producer Hugh Fordin, however, knew what to do with Cook, which was, essentially, to let her do what she did best, sing show music. Close as Pages in a Book was a songbook tribute to lyricist Dorothy Fields, a songwriter not much previously recognized, both because she wrote only words, not music (the composers always get more attention), and because she was a girl in what was very much a boys' club. But Fields had an extensive career writing for stage and screen, and Cook's selection of 13 songs gives a sense of breadth. The singer's strengths lean toward the expression of sincere romantic feeling, and she wisely looks for Fields lyrics that support that tone. Songs like the title tune, "Make the Man Love Me," and "The Way You Look Tonight" (a duet with Tommy Tune) are right up her street, and she also gets a lot out of more buoyant material such as "I Can't Give You Anything but Love," "I'm in the Mood for Love," and even "Bojangles of Harlem." On the other hand, she eschews Fields lyrics not suited to her, such as the "sarcastic love song" (as it was subtitled originally) "A Fine Romance," and the arch "Big Spender." Those may be among Fields' best-known songs, but Cook is more comfortable with more open-hearted sentiments. Particularly welcome are her discoveries of more obscure Fields songs such as "April Snow" and "April Fooled Me." Arrangers Peter Matz, Michael Gibson, and Wally Harper (who also conducted) provide Cook with sympathetic arrangements that sometimes hark back to the 1920s style of Fields' earliest material with composer Jimmy McHugh. The album is a celebration both of the most accomplished female show tune lyricist of the 20th century, and one of the strongest show tune interpreters of the century's second half. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music GuidePerformers: John Campo - Bassoon, Clarinet, Clarinet (Bass), Saxophone; Nikki Harris - Tape; Jay Berliner - Banjo, Guitar; Peter Gordon - French Horn; Susan Jolles - Harp; Charles McCracken - Cello; Sharon M |

Close Your Eyes $11.98 For his debut recording, Chicago vocalist Elling pushes the envelope, challenging listeners and his musicians with beat poetry, ranting, and his Mark Murphy-ish singing. There's quite a bit of dramatist/actor in Elling, although the romantic in him is also pretty prevalent. Acting much like a tenor saxophonist, Elling can wail and shout, expound on social themes, and scat like a demon. Help from the extraordinary pianist Laurence Hobgood, bassists Eric Hochberg and Rob Amster, and drummer Paul Wertico inspires Elling to even higher plateaus, while tenor saxophone foils Ed Peterson and Von Freeman appear separately on three of the 13 tracks. Elling writes a ton of lyrics. His take on Wayne Shorter's "Dolores" is "Dolores Dream," on which the singer speaks of Chi-Town in terms both favorable (hanging out at the Green Mill jazz club) and not so favorable ("fat frying, spluttering rank Chicago smeltering along, smothered in hot wooly sweat"), with a maniacal swing following his a cappella intro. His ramrod scatting is amazing both on this piece and on an exploratory take of Herbie Hancock's "Hurricane." A "So What"-type modality informs "(Hide The) Salome," with vicious scatting and Freeman's tenor in complete, frustrated agreement. Elling's poetic recitation of "Married Blues" and the avant beat style of "Now It Is Time" show his reverence for Rexroth and Rilke, respectively. As far as pure singing goes, "All the Sad Young Men" is beautifully rendered -- similar to Murphy, but not as overtly pronounced. "Close Your Eyes" opens with a tender piano intro, flowing into bass/vocal wistfulness and a midtempo romp. Elling extrapolates on the original lyric and scats feverishly on the bridge. He is at his most sexual on the slinky bossa "Never Say Goodbye" and the ballad "Storyteller Experiencing Total Confusion," with Peterson's sax shyly filling in cracks of fear and disillusionment. There's clearly more in store for Elling as he matures, but this is as auspicious a vocal jazz debut as the world has heard. ~ Michael G. Nastos, All Music GuidePerformers: Rob Amster - Bass, Bass (Acoustic), Bass (Electric); Kurt Elling - Vocals; Von Freeman - Sax (Tenor); Laurence Hobgood - Piano, Synthesizer; Eric Hochberg - Bass, Bass (Acoustic); David Onderdonk - Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric); |
