Do cats know what time it is? Seriously?
When ever I forget to set my alarm, my cat wakes me up by climbing under the covers with me and making bread and nursing on me until I wake up. This is usually 10 or 15 minutes after my alarm is supposed to go off. He only does this on weekdays. There has never been a weekend day, when I'm allowed to sleep in, that he wakes me up like this. It's been happening more lately as I got a new alarm clock and am not in the habit of setting it every night yet. And he never does it to my husband, who is out of work, only me. Which has led me to think he really does know what time it is.
I don't have a set time that I feed him, he free feeds. Bad, I know, and also not part of the question, just more info. What time I get up has nothing to do with his food.
Cats quickly develop a routine being creatures of habit. They know what time you leave and what time you come back. When your going to sleep in relationship to the color outside, or perhaps your mood.
He does it to you because he knows he doesn't get up at the same time or leave and come back like you.
Cats are extremely intelligent and easily get into cycles so things like days off or summer vacation confuses them they think "When the sun comes up aren't you supposed to leave?"
Think about it you feed them so if you don't get up early enough then what if you don't feed them? The whole day would be wrecked by that small thing.
