The Handbook of Natural Flavonoids , a href= $185.79 Flavonoids are a large and important group of natural products derived from 'flavone'. Some flavonoids are intensely coloured, providing a spectrum of colours from red to blue in flowers, fruit and leaves. Other flavonoids are essentially colourless, producing the 'whiteness' of white flowers. Besides their contribution to plant colour, flavonoids have a variety of other roles in the growth and development of plants. Leaf flavonoids provide protection from the potential damage of UVB radiation. Certain flavanones are formed as antifungal barriers in plant leaves in response to microbial infection and others play an important part in plant reproduction. Flavonoids also exhibit a wide range of biological properties including anti-microbial, insecticidal and oestrogenic activities. Edited by one of the world's acknowledged leading researchers in flavonoid chemistry and biochemistry, this book is the essential guide to the chemical structure and function of all known flavonoids and contains full references, CAS numbers, chemical structures, molecular formulae and several extensive indexes. The Handbook of Natural Flavonoids is the definitive reference to this large and important group of natural products for researchers in pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry, plant biochemistry and organic chemistry.Flavones.<br><br>Flavone O-glycosides.<br><br>Flavonols.<br><br>Flavonol O-glycosides.<br><br>C-Glycosylflavones.<br><br>Biflavonyls.<br><br>Index.Flavonoids are a large and important group of natural products derived from 'flavone'. Mechanical Horizon $13.98 Mechanical Horizon is a release that reinforces Decoded Feedback's reputation of being able to put a solid album together. Washes of sound serve as a backdrop for solid-beat electro arrangements, the bass vocals of Marco Biagotti completing a picture of a broken darkwave future. Mechanical Horizon is a welcome addition at a time when many electro-industrial artists are taking cues from the rise of the synth pop scene. Decoded Feedback provides a contrast to this, sporting a darkness and gravity in its arrangements and mixing soft- and hard-edged electro sounds, without overburdening the music with noise and ambience. Tracks do not race against the beats-per-minute counter but retain their impact (such as "Immortal"). The dark EBM feel also works well in the faster tracks (such as "Dark-Star," a very dancefloor-friendly track), and helps lend a sense of variety to the release. Decoded Feedback has also covered the Fields of the Nephilim track "The Sequel," a welcome tribute for fans of the goth rock band. Mechanical Horizon is a listenable release with more than a few very good tracks, completing any collection of this band's work. ~ Theo Kavadias, All Music GuidePerformers: Marco Biagiotti - Bass, Drums, Sampling, Vocals; Yone Dudas - Bass, Drums, Keyboards |

The Mechanical Hand $13.98 R. Borlax, Horse the Band's 2003 debut, was a splintered and explosive fete to Nintendo Power Glove fanaticism powered by raucous post-hardcore. Dubbed "Nintendocore" by the California band, the album didn't always work. It wasn't purely realized enough to match the wiry post-rock video game themes rocked by the Advantage, and its grabs at metal, hardcore, and basic noise were too disjointed. Were listeners supposed to laugh, or rock out? Well, 2005's Mechanical Hand fine-tunes Horse the Band's entire operation. Erik Engstrom's keyboard still guides these songs, and often recalls the mechanistic, gawky robot feel of '80s video game music. But Engstrom and Horse the Band recall the 1980s in general, too. "Manateen" is incredible. It starts out by ripping off the same tubular Duran Duran groove that's responsible for the Killers, but shifts garishly into an angular post-hardcore screech, like a noisier version of what Fugazi were doing at decade's end. Horse aren't finished. "Manateen" goes on to crash soft synth melodies into righteous hardcore, and despite these jarring parts and sounds, Mechanical Hand never sounds as fragmented as R. Borlax. The experiments continue. Arrows whiz by, men scream, and drawn swords rattle over the rolling snare of "Heroes Die"'s intro; it soon becomes a monolithic metal trudge. Shades of Iron Maiden, Brainiac, White Zombie, Converge, Dig Dug, and Mario Cart bare their teeth on "House of God" and "Octopus on Fire"; the keyboard stabs away, the guitars ring with something approaching anthemic or at least thickheaded glory, and Nathan Winneke's vocals go from yowl to growl to snark in the twist of an elbow. Horse the Band have to be kidding with portions of Hand, trying to skewer some of the more serious types in metal circles. (Mars Volta and System of a Down come to mind.) The lyric sheet takes pains to write out every elongated word ("I want the Channnngggee!"), and there are a few couplets like "Sleep well mechanical thing/You were fun for a while/But now I'm going to get a burrito." But with so many bands -- especially heavy ones -- pulling out "concept record" tags or just generally being pretentious, some kidding can be pretty refreshing. And that the music on this one is a quality notch above Horse the Band's promising debut makes Mechanical Hand even better. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music GuidePerformers: Dashiell Arkenstone - Bass, Guitar (Bass); Erik Engstrom - Keyboards; Eli Green - Drums; David Isen - Guitar; |

Mechanical Resonance $9.95 Sacramento's oddly named Tesla (a moniker inspired by renegade inventor and pioneering electrical engineer Nikola Tesla) took the side door to '80s hard rock success, sneaking up on the charts and into the bedrooms of none-the-wiser glam metal consumers with their rock-solid debut, Mechanical Resonance -- itself titled after one of Nikola's better-known experiments, and a fascinating case study in musical compromise if ever there were one. Essentially, the album was partitioned into two quite different halves, with side one predominantly tailored to seduce the aforementioned music fans via radio-friendly templates and therefore packed with mostly throwaway, cliché-ridden arena anthems like "EZ Come, EZ Go," "Cumin' Atcha Live," and the gloriously dumb "Rock Me to the Top," boasting few surprises but plenty of testosterone. Yes, a few hints of Tesla's substantial songwriting intelligence can be glimpsed within the gritty strut of "Gettin' Better" and the bluesy balladry of "We're No Good Together," but most of the band's more mature and accomplished songs are saved for Mechanical Resonance's revelatory side two. Here, lead guitarist Frank Hannon really takes charge and establishes himself as the band's de facto difference maker, beginning with an epic of Led Zeppelin-like class and complexity in "Modern Day Cowboy," which was built upon a lopsided riff so irresistible that not even its finger-twisting complexity could keep it from becoming one of their most popular standards. This was followed by another pair of eventual fan favorites doubling as good examples of Tesla's creative range, since the wintry drama of the piano-laced "Changes" stood in stark contrast to the upbeat summer vibe of "Little Suzi." And finally, as though the aforementioned detours didn't proffer enough food for thought, Tesla even flirted with art rock on the odd rhythms and clever economy of "Cover Queen," before concluding with the desolate sobriety of closer "Before My Eyes." Given all these qualities and contrasts, it's no wonder that Mechanical Resonance stood out as one of the 1980s' most eclectic hard rock albums, and provided a formidable introduction to one of the era's most underrated American bands. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music GuidePerformers: Michael Barbiero - Vocals (Background); Troy Luccketta - Cymbals, Drums; Brian Wheat - Bass (Electric), Guitar (Bass), Guitar (Electric), Vocals (Background); Frank Hannon - Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric), Keyboards, Mandolin, Vocals (Background); |

Flip City $15.98 On this, their third album, Ranch Romance recovered some of the energy that was missing from Blue Blazes. The program opens with the defiant "Wheatfield Annie" and then proceeds to the high-octane rockabilly of "Baby's Gonna Come Back Home," and though things slow down with the prairie lament "Sweet Comfort in the Blues," they pick up immediately afterwards with a Cajun stutter-step on "Happy to See You." Guitar whiz David Keenan, who had had an on-and-off relationship with the group since its first album, is finally a fully acknowledged member of the band at this point, and his rapid-fire licks enliven "Yes, Yes, Yes" and the jazzy instrumental "Swing Twain." (He also takes over the lead vocal slot on the forgettable "Have I Ever Let You Down...Completely.") The album ends with a lovely Tex-Mex ballad entitled "Can You Really Let Go of Columbia?" Very nice. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music GuidePerformers: Nova Devonie - Accordion, Vocals, Vocals (Background); Barbara Lamb - Fiddle, Vocals, Vocals (Background); Jo Miller - Guitar (Rhythm), Vocals, Vocals (Background); Jody Miller - Guitar (Rhythm), Vocals, Vocals (Background); Mark Ivester - Drums, Percussion; Nancy Katz - Bass, Bass (Upright), Vocals (Background); David Keenan - Guitar, Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric), Mandolin, Vocals, Vocals (Background); Tim O'Brien - Guitar, Guitar (Acoustic) |

Micro Mechanical Transducers $254 Some years ago, silicon-based mechanical sensors, like pressure sensors, accelerometers and gyroscopes, started their successful advance. Every year, hundreds of millions of these devices are sold, mainly for medical and automotive applications. The airbag sensor on which research already started several decades ago at Stanford University can be found in every new car and has saved already numerous lives. Pressure sensors are also used in modern electronic blood pressure equipment. Many other mechanical sensors, mostly invisible to the public, perform useful functions in countless industrial and consumer products. The underlying physics and technology of silicon-based mechanical sensors is rather complex and is treated in numerous publications scattered throughout the literature. Therefore, a clear need existed for a handbook that thoroughly and systematically reviews the present basic knowledge on these devices. After a short introduction, Professor Bao discusses the main issues relevant to silicon-based mechanical sensors. First a thorough treatment of stress and strain in diaphragms and beams is presented. Next, vibration of mechanical structures is illuminated, followed by a chapter on air damping. These basic chapters are then succeeded by chapters in which capacitive and piezoresistive sensing techniques are amply discussed. The book concludes with chapters on commercially available pressure sensors, accelerometers and resonant sensors in which the above principles are applied. Everybody, involved in designing silicon-based mechanical sensors, will find a wealth of useful information in the book, assisting the designer in obtaining highly optimized devices. |
