Any harm for switching to backward gear in moving forward when driving a car?
My car is 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis. Once on the highway, I wanted to switch to N gear in order to brake the car, but I made a mistake and switch to Backward Reverse Gear(Perhaps near R, but not completely in R). Suddenly, I heard a sharp noise and shake. I am very guilty of this fatal mistake. Although the car seems working well after the mistake, I want to know whether there is any harm for this? Does my car (1997 Mercury Grand Marquis) has the automatic protection mechanism for this mistake? Thank you.
Its probably not caused any damage. The noise you heard was the reverse gear trying to engage the clutch, but it obviously didn't go in or the gearbox would probably have dropped out of the bottom of the car. I'm pretty sure the car doesn't have any protection against this happening but its actually not that easy to put your car into reverse when its going forward at any speed. Even in a manual. You will have got away with it but i'd be careful in future.
